Presented here is a Late 19th Century medal of the Virgin Mary that is inspired by the 17th Century painting of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a Spanish painter who practically imposed this image on later representations.
It is hand painted on brass , in high relief then Kiln fired and inserted in an 18 k gold frame. The gold frame is of a much later date. There is a signature of the artist.
The obverse is also enameled but plain.
The hand work is very fine, in high relief and shows the Virgin Ascending to Heaven.
The medal is in pristine condition and it is sold WITH the chain in the picture .
This chain is in Vermeil – 24K gold plated Sterling Silver and is 50 cm long.
Such workmanship is very rare to find especially in high relief. It is a very unusual and beautiful item, in great condition and will bring great pleasure to its owner.
