All Antique and Vintage Rosaries that I list come from my private collection. They are genuine antiques – older than 100 years – or genuine vintages – from 30 to 100 years old. All are in perfect condition and still very much usable. They are unique and a real pleasure to collect or still use.
The item in this listing has the following characteristics:
The rosary and its hand painted box made of Corozo Nut in the form of an egg, are both made in France in the early 1920’s. The set is very rare and in pristine condition.
1) 5.3 mm average dia. Vintage Glass (?) Blood stone beads for the Ave Marias and same beads for the Pater Nosters. All beads are capped. At first look these beads appear to be bloodstone but a closer inspection reveals they are glass imitating bloodstone, but made so well that one may be mistaken. The beads are definitely hand made in view of the small variations in size and shape. In fact this high quality, perfectly crafted art glass is today much more rare and sought after than genuine bloodstone.
3) All Metal Parts of the rosary are Oria plate. Both the cross and center bear an ORIA Hallmark. Oria, founded in 1897, is a company well known for their heavily gold foiled and rolled jewelry. They used brass jewelry and they applied a heavy 14 or 18 carat gold foil over it. They also made lots of art nouveau-style jewelry. Oria jewelry is reputed to withstand long-term wear and be easily mistaken for real gold.
4) The Box is also a very interesting part of the set : It is made of Corozo Shell and hand painted and carved. Another name for the corozo nut is : Tagua nut. It is avery hard endosperm seed of species of palm trees called the ivory palms or tagua palms which live from southern Panama along the Andes to Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, northwestern Brazil, and Peru.
5) The rosary is sold with its box, as a set.
6. It was very fashionable in the first part of the 20th century make rosary boxes from Corozo nuts. This is a rare example of a painted one.
7. Total length of the rosary : 40 cm ( 16 in.)
