A remarkable antique Catholic chaplet featuring large mother of pearl beads, sterling silver components, a 1916 inscribed cross, and an exceptionally rare Janus memento mori bead.

This one-decade open Catholic chaplet comes from a private collection of antique and vintage rosaries. It is an exceptionally distinctive devotional object combining religious symbolism, fine materials, historical craftsmanship, and an unusual Janus memento mori carved bead.

The chaplet features unusually large mother of pearl beads, substantial sterling silver elements, and a rare double-sided bone bead depicting the Crucified Christ on one side and a human skull on the other.

The memento mori tradition uses imagery such as skulls and death to encourage reflection on mortality and the transience of earthly life. Its two opposing faces give this particular bead the distinctive Janus association, referencing Janus, the Roman god traditionally associated with transitions, passages, and duality.

A Rare Janus Memento Mori Bead

The centerpiece of this chaplet is its unusually large Janus memento mori bead, measuring approximately 25.20 × 18.3 mm.

Carved from bone, one side presents the head of the Crucified Christ, while the opposite side depicts a human skull. This striking combination of Christian devotion and memento mori symbolism makes the bead particularly unusual for collectors.

Based on its style and characteristics, the memento mori bead may date to approximately 1840–1850, although this earlier dating is an attribution rather than a documented date.

Large Mother of Pearl Beads

The chaplet is distinguished by its substantial mother of pearl components.

  • Ave beads: Approximately 15 × 12 mm oval mother of pearl beads
  • Padre bead: Approximately 19 mm round mother of pearl bead
  • Cross: Approximately 80 × 43 mm mother of pearl and sterling silver
  • Medal: Approximately 50 × 35 mm mother of pearl and sterling silver

The large scale of these components gives the chaplet a particularly substantial and tactile presence.

1916 Inscribed Sterling Silver Cross

The large mother of pearl and sterling silver cross remains in excellent condition. The reverse of the silver portion is inscribed:

“30 avril 1916”

The inscription is accompanied by the name:

“Anna Mouchet”

French sterling silver hallmarks are present on the cross and medal, and all metal components are sterling silver.

The dated inscription adds an important historical and personal element to this antique devotional piece.

Rare Mother of Pearl Religious Medal

The opposite section features another unusual mother of pearl religious medal, approximately 50 × 35 mm.

The medal depicts Jesus Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns and holding the Cross, surrounded by a halo associated with resurrection imagery. A chain attached to the medal carries an additional sterling silver cross.

Together, the medal, cross, mother of pearl, sterling silver, and memento mori elements create a highly distinctive devotional object.

Why This Antique Chaplet Is Collectible

This is more than a traditional religious object. Its appeal comes from the combination of several uncommon characteristics: large mother of pearl components, French sterling silver, a dated 1916 cross, a rare religious medal, and an unusual double-sided Janus memento mori bead.

The contrast between the image of Christ and the skull creates a powerful visual representation of mortality, faith, and the passage between life and death. The historical inscription and French silver hallmarks further contribute to its appeal to collectors of antique Catholic devotional objects, antique rosaries, memento mori artifacts, religious antiques, and historic mother of pearl jewelry.

Each antique and vintage rosary in the collection is unique, and this chaplet is particularly notable for its unusual construction, large-scale components, historical details, and rare memento mori imagery.

A Distinctive Antique for Collectors

Whether collected as an antique Catholic devotional piece, studied for its historical craftsmanship, or appreciated as an example of memento mori art, this chaplet offers an unusual combination of religious symbolism and antique artistry.

Its excellent condition, substantial materials, 1916 inscription, French sterling silver hallmarks, and exceptionally rare Janus memento mori bead make it a compelling addition to a specialized collection.

An original antique with remarkable character, historical interest, and collectible rarity.
