Late 19th Cent. 1 Decade Open Chaplet Uranium Glass & Sterling Silver w Janus Memento Mori and Enamel Reliquary Cross - Bavarian - Rare

All Antique and Vintage Rosaries that I list come from my private collection.
They are genuine antiques – older than 100 years – or genuine vintages – from 30 to 100 years old.
All are in perfect condition and still very much usable.
They are unique and a real pleasure to collect or still use.

The item in this listing has the following characteristics:

It is a one decade open catholic chaplet with large faceted Uranium Glass( Vaseline) beads and heavy Sterling silver content : Large Filigree Sterling double sided Bavarian Reliquary enamel cross on one side and a large heart Silver locket .

Its main special feature is that it has a Janus Memento Mori attached. This is a Rosary Bead Carved with the Head of the Crucified Christ on one side and a Human Skull on the other.
This rosary bead is carved in bone. The memento mori on this chaplet may very well date to the beginnoing or half of the 19th century.

The aim of a Memento Mori is to remind us the inevitability of death. As the god of transitions and dualities, Janus is portrayed with two faces—one facing the past, and one facing the future.
This is why this representation or memento mori, with two opposite faces, is called a Janus memento mori.

1- The Uranium faceted beads are oval for the Aves with a large size of 12 x 11 mm on the average

2- The padre bead is replaced by the memento mori bead and a credo cross.

3- The Janus memento mori bead is 12.3 x 11 mm. It has exceptional detailed beautiful work.

4- the reliquary double sided Bavarian cross is 80 x 40 mm in filigree sterling silver - still in pristine condition

5- The Sterling Silver heart locket on the other side is 39 x 35 mm. Best described by photos.

Uranium glass is glass which has had uranium, usually in oxide diuranate form, added to a glass mix before melting for coloration. The proportion usually varies from trace levels to about 2% uranium by weight.
Uranium glass is recognized by its luminescence under UV light ( called also Black light) . It is not luminescent in the dark.

Today faceted quality Uranium beads are of high rarity and much sought after by collectors.
The Uranium glass objects are completely safe to handle as the radio activity of uranium glass objects is hardly traceable and does not exceed that of any other surrounding object of every day life
